What's inside

  • Over 55 items in Every trip, Cruise, Beach, Camping and Winter sections
  • Turn a section on or off for each trip, and items you don't need show "Not this trip"
  • A checkbox column for each traveler, so everyone packs their own things
  • Items for everyone, items to share, or items for one person, each counted the right way
  • A traveler tab that shows how much each person has left to pack
  • Reusable: untick the boxes and it's ready for the next trip. Print it or use it on your phone

How to use it

  1. Make your copy

Click "Make a copy" to save the list to your Google Drive, or download the Excel file.

  2. Add your travelers

Type each traveler's name over Alex, Sam, Mia and Leo at the top of the Packing List tab. On the Summary tab, set how many people are going.

  3. Pick your sections

On Trip Setup, tick the sections that fit this trip. A cruise with beach stops gets Every trip, Cruise and Beach. A ski weekend gets Every trip and Winter.

  4. Make it yours

Add, delete or rename items. In the For column, write Everyone if each person needs one, Shared if the group needs one, or a traveler's name.

  5. Tick as you pack

Each person ticks their own column. Shared items need one tick from anyone. Status changes to Packed when everyone who needs the item has it.

  6. Reuse it next time

After the trip, select the checkbox columns and press Delete to untick them all. Change the sections and you're ready to pack again.

Tips

Keep medications and documents in your carry-on

Passports, prescriptions and a change of clothes should never go in a checked bag. The Notes column is a good place to say which bag something goes in.

Pack a day-one bag for a cruise

Checked luggage can take hours to reach your cabin. Keep swimsuits, sunscreen and medications in a small bag you carry on board.

Check your cruise line's rules

Many lines ban surge protectors, irons and some other items. Look at your cruise line's banned items list before you pack the tech bag.

Print a copy for kids

Filter by a child's name in the For column, print it, and let them tick items off on paper. It keeps them busy and builds the habit.

Questions

What should I pack for a cruise?

The Cruise section covers the basics people forget: boarding documents, a lanyard for your key card, a formal night outfit, a day bag for port days, magnetic hooks, seasickness remedies and a power strip without a surge protector. Add the Beach section for warm-weather stops.

Can I print this packing checklist?

Yes. In Google Sheets choose File > Print. To print only this trip's items, add a filter and hide rows that say Not this trip first. Or download the Excel file and print from there.

How does the per-traveler checklist work?

Each traveler has a checkbox column. Items marked Everyone need a tick from each person, Shared items need one tick from anyone, and named items need that person's tick.

Can I add my own sections?

Yes. Add a new row on the Trip Setup tab, for example Business, then use that name in the Section column for new items.

Can more than four people use it?

The list has four traveler columns. For a bigger group, give each family one column, or insert another checkbox column before Status and update the formulas to include it.

Is it free?

Yes. Copy it to your Google Drive or download the Excel file. No sign-up.

Pro version

Packing List Pro

One master packing list you keep for life: set the trip, and it works out what each person needs and how many.

A list that gets better every trip

Keep one master list. Each trip you change the dates, weather and trip types on Setup, clear the ticks, and start packing.

Only what this trip needs

Items are tagged by trip type and weather, so the ski gear stays off the beach trip and the rain jacket only comes when rain is likely.

The right number of each

Clothes scale with the length of the trip, with a cap and a laundry setting. Nine days with laundry every five packs five days of clothes.

A column for each person

Everyone gets their own tick column, plus one for shared things. Items a person doesn't need turn grey, and you can see who still has packing to do.

Printable lists for everyone

Print a two-column checklist for one person, the shared bag or the whole trip. Kids can tick their own.

Nothing left on the counter

See what to buy before you go and what to pack on the morning you leave, like phones, chargers and the favourite stuffed animal.
