What's inside

  • Room for 12 savings goals, each with a target amount, a target date and any money already saved
  • A deposits log: date, goal, amount and a note. Withdrawals go in as negative amounts
  • Saved, left to save and progress for every goal, worked out from the log
  • How much to save each month and each week to reach each target on time
  • Status for each goal: Saving, Reached or Past date
  • A summary with your total saved, the monthly amount for all goals and what you saved this year

How to use it

  1. Download your copy

Click "Free download" to save the .xlsx file. It opens in Excel, or in Google Sheets: open a blank sheet (sheets.new) and choose File, then Import, then Upload.

  2. Set today's date

On the Summary tab, type =TODAY() in the Today cell so months left and statuses stay current. The sample uses a fixed date so the example makes sense.

  3. List your goals

On the Goals tab, clear the sample rows and type each goal with a target amount and a target date. If you already have money put aside for it, type that in Already saved.

  4. Log every deposit

Each time you move money into savings, add a row on the Deposits tab with the date, the goal (spelled exactly as on Goals) and the amount. If you take money out, type it as a negative number.

  5. Read the monthly amount

Monthly needed shows what to save for each goal between now and its target date. Add them up on the Summary tab to see what all your goals need together.

  6. Check in once a month

Look at the Status column and the Summary. If the total monthly amount is more than you can save, move a target date later or lower a target.

Tips

One account, many goals

You don't need a bank account per goal. Keep one savings account and use the sheet to track how much of it belongs to each goal. The goal totals should add up to your account balance.

Automate the transfer

Set up a transfer from checking to savings on payday for the monthly amount the sheet shows, then log it once a month. Saving first is easier than saving what's left.

Name goals clearly

"Summer trip to Portugal" is easier to stick with than "Travel". Pick a name that reminds you why you're saving. Just use the same spelling on both tabs.

Plan for costs you know are coming

Car insurance, Christmas, school fees and repairs all come round every year. Give each one a goal with its due date and the monthly amount spreads the cost out (this is often called a sinking fund).

Questions

How do I make a spreadsheet for savings?

List each savings goal with a target and a date, keep a log of every deposit, and add up the deposits for each goal with SUMIFS. This template does all of that for you, plus the monthly amount you need to save for each goal.

How does it work out the monthly amount?

It takes what's left to save and divides it by the months between today and the target date. If the date has passed and the goal isn't reached, it shows the whole amount left, and the status says Past date.

How much should my emergency fund be?

A common rule of thumb is three to six months of essential expenses, but the right amount depends on your job, household and other savings. A financial advisor can help you pick a number that fits you.

How do I record a withdrawal?

Add a row on the Deposits tab with a negative amount, like -350, and a note saying what it was for. The goal's saved total goes down and the monthly amount goes up to catch back up.

Why isn't a deposit showing up on a goal?

The goal name on the Deposits tab has to match the Goals tab exactly, including spaces. The Check column on Deposits says Not a goal when a name doesn't match, and the Summary counts them.

Can I track more than 12 goals?

Yes. Insert rows above the last goal row and copy the formulas down, then stretch the Goals ranges in the Summary formulas to match. The Deposits tab has room for 100 entries and grows the same way.

Is the savings tracker free?

Yes. Download the .xlsx file and open it in Excel or Google Sheets. There's no sign-up and no email needed.

Pro version

Savings Tracker Pro

List what you're saving for, log each deposit and see which goals are on track and what to save each month to hit every date.

Know if each goal is on track

Every goal is compared with a steady pace from its start date, so you see On track, Behind, Past date or Reached at a glance, not just a percentage.

One monthly number that's real

The Dashboard adds up what every goal needs each month and sets it against what you can actually save, so you know if you're short or have some to spare.

Sinking funds for costs you know are coming

Mark a goal as repeating every 12 months, like car insurance or Christmas, and it gets a steady monthly set-aside with a flag when it needs topping up.

Your emergency fund in months

Type your must-pay monthly costs and see how many months your emergency fund would cover, with 1, 3 and 6 month milestones.

One log, everything else worked out

Add deposits as you make them. Withdrawals are just negative amounts. Saved totals, projected finish dates and a month-by-month view all follow.

Watch your goals fill up

A colour-in tab fills a square for every 5% you save, and a chart shows your total savings growing month by month.
